Rebuilding Early Childhood Education
NewCAJE Early Childhood Intensive presented by Paula Hoffman, Early Childhood Consultant and facilitator of Early Childhood Jewish Educators Facebook group and Allison Charapp, Education Director, Tree of Life Preschool at Kol Shalom, Annapolis, MD
Rebuilding Early Childhood Education Through the Natural World
We believe that the Earth was created by G-d and gifted to humankind. G-d has entrusted us to be caretakers of the planet for future generations. The silver lining to the COVID-chaos is having the distinct privilege of rebuilding the foundation of early childhood experiences through nature. As educators working with our youngest minds and bodies, we will explore a variety of potentials offered by our planet through the Jewish lens.
Everything that we teach and learn occurs naturally outdoors.  Nature is science, nature is language, nature is mathematics, nature is art, nature is social, nature grows with us. Children blossom in nature.
Together through conversations and sharing, we will address the diverse ways educators can introduce children to experiences, explorations, and independence in our Jewish indoor and outdoor environments.
Weather permitting (so dress appropriately), our day will include discovering connections to the outdoor world via walks, ephemeral art experiences, conversations, challenges, sharing of our own practices, and so much more. Our goal is to collectively create and provide concrete plans that can be implemented into your own sites.  Everyone will feel confident in taking fresh steps moving forward on a new path in the year ahead.

What's the "new normal" in our post-Covid world?
Will things ever be back to "normal?" (and what's "normal" anyway?) While many of us pre-covid wondered how to effect change in our schools - the covid years forced the issue upon us - EVERYTHING changed. Whether you've been in the same position for years - or assumed a new role just pre/during/post Covid - you're most likely dealing with the unprecedented (at least in recent times) break in the flow of Jewish education. What did we learn during the lock-down years? How can our schools/communities/students/teachers benefit from what we've learned . . .and how do we move forward? Come join in a discussion of learning to let-go of the past and embrace the future. This session is designed for Directors/Administrators.

Two Haftorot, Two Isaiahs
While the psychological aspects of Bar/Bat Mitzvah are central to the experience - learning the difficult hebrew words and the trope, and "performing" in public - it's also vitally important to teach the powerful messages and poetry of these passages. We will focus on two haftarot: for Parshat Noach and Parshat Yitro. Why might these have been chosen? What are the links between the Torah reading and the Haftarot? And why do they reflect two entirely different historical circumstances, a century and a half apart.

Strange Tales from the Torah - or - They never taught me that before in Hebrew School
Framed in a Superhero, supernatural, or fantasy motif, the Strange Tales from the Torah curriculum deals with actual Torah texts, linked in theme or motif to culturally relevant modalities. The methodology, best for middle school students, includes the use of videos, interactive materials, visual examination of the texts, manipulative activities, and creative writing/graphics. Despite the playful presentation, the material is pedagogically sound and results in increased interest in looking more closely at the Hebrew texts, exploring Torah tales often overlooked, and recognizing the Torah as a text worthy of further study.

When we cultivate, we intentionally work on making friendships stronger in our own unique contexts amongst colleagues and children. Grounded by love and kindness, it is through our friends that we can develop into ourselves. False Facts? How Jews Rewrite the Past to Meet the Needs of the Present
In this provocative session we will examine ways in which Jews have rewritten history from the Bible through today. We will pose foundational questions about plagiarism, censorship, and the manipulation of facts. Judaism has always involved changing representations of the past to resonate with evolving assumptions and expectations of the present. The material and questions we will discuss are most relevant for sparking conversations among high school students and adults, particularly in light of contemporary claims of “false facts” and questions of truth. You will discover that there are both positive and negative dimensions to changing our presentation of the past for the present.

Dancing With Miracles
Based on Yaffa Eliach’s Hasidic Tales of the Holocaust, Dancing With Miracles is a musical theater play with a full score. Yaffa’s oral histories emphasize the resilience and humanity of true stories, historically accurate, but the truth approaches magical realism as stories tell of flying through the air, trusting the vision of one’s dreams, and the blessing of a simple “good morning.” Come hear stories, selections from the score, and discuss how the songs interpreted the stories and how art represents the full picture of the Holocaust even after the eyewitnesses can no longer bear witness.

Jewish Values are Human Values: How Jewish values are integrated into emergent curriculum.
Early childhood Jewish education lays the foundation for children’s Jewish identity. Learn how to pull out the big ideas and values behind the children’s interests, questions and thoughts. We will do this by looking at documentation, videos, audio clips, and children’s play from a 4'5/'s class. No matter what the curriculum topic ends up being about, the principles of fostering critical thinking, problem solving, and caring for the community are the consistent values that guide our decisions as educators. Values that are not only Jewish values, but human values.

The Four Words of Prayer: Strategies for an Intentional Jewish Prayer Practice

What if just four words could unlock the power of prayer? This workshop invites you to explore the profound concepts behind these key words, giving you the tools to empower children and yourself to connect with your own spirituality through the language of your heart.
Drawing on my 'Words From My Heart' approach to spirituality and prayer, we'll use science-based research, Jewish traditions, creative practices, and ancient stories to enhance children's spiritual development while also bridging to traditional forms of prayer. Our goal is to create a space where students and educators can experience a meaningful connection to the divine, using their own words and tapping into the timeless wisdom of Jewish prayer.

This workshop is about using the teachings of Martin Buber and Jewish child psychologist Dr. Haim Ginott to understand and work with children behaving badly, whether they be abled or disabled. We’ll discuss how Jewish values are used to work with children, build a connection, a kesher, as the basis for remedying bad behavior. We’ll learn about how Jewish values lead us to empathize, and understand the underpinnings of temper tantrums. Participants will be asked to bring their experiences (with full respect for confidentiality) to share to understand what was done correctly, and what needed correction. Taking Miracles Seriously: A Journey to Everyday Spirituality
In this workshop, we will examine some textual examples of miracles in the Torah. It is more than a subtle curiosity that every time the Torah describes a miracle, no one seems to draw the “obvious” lesson, which may be the most important lession of all. This is strange because all of us divide our experiences in life as either ordinary or extraordinary. We will explore Judaism’s unique point of view as to how to celebrate the sacred nature in the commonplace. If we were to take life’s ordinary events for granted less, our lives would be much richer. This methodology may assist especially young people, to be open to the deeper meanings in Torah—the ones that are hiding “in plain sight”. We will learn how to bring that openness into our classrooms.

Teaching with Radical Amazement: Celebrating Children’s Thinking as a Foundation for Planning
As a partner to the children in their learning, the teacher’s way of being and “seeing” is significant and impactful. How do we enter moments with presence, awakened to the possibilities? How do we find the extraordinary in the ordinary? Using examples from the classroom, through a constructivist, Reggio-inspired lens, and with a foundation in the Jewish lens of Hitorerut/Awakening, we will discuss the role of the teacher in recognizing key moments in the children’s dialogues and actions, reacting with joy, wonder, and engagement to the insights and theories of the children, and marveling with children as they research the world around them.

How can we make Biblical stories relevant today? How can we use art to explore themes and characters in the Torah? Hillel created Parsha Posters--a series of graphic illustrations for each Torah portion--to find meaning in the Biblical text, and believes in visual art as a powerful way to share personal midrash. He leads this workshop with groups of all ages to provide the tools for greater understanding through artistic expression. We will begin with a brief talk about the fundamentals of minimalist design and about his inspiration for the project. Small groups will then read and discuss assigned Biblical texts. Finally, everyone will design and present their own posters as a way of reflecting visually on the Torah they just learned."Torah Through Arts" includes this session and Andrea Shupack's session Writing Your Own Torah, both of which explore art making as a tool for deeper Torah study. Looking In, Looking Out: Understanding our Individual and Collective Jewish Identities Through a Facing History Lens
Participants in this workshop will examine the concept of multiple identities, with an emphasis on what it means for young people to be Jewish in the US. Educators know that students learn best when they feel safe in their school environment. That sense of safety extends not only to their physical wellbeing but to their ability to show up as their full, complex selves. Adolescents seek to understand how they view themselves, how other people see them, and how their multiple identities interact with one another. When students engage in this type of exploration, they begin to exhibit increased empathy for others. Young people in Jewish educational settings hold multiple complex identities, both in their Jewish contexts and as citizens of a larger world. In this session, you will learn to recognize identities your students hold and how they decide what parts of themselves to share and what pieces to keep hidden.

Jewish Placemaking: Exploring Jewish Text for Empathy Building
Jewish Placemaking is the pedagogy in development at Makom Community's Lab School in Philadelphia. When our learners engage with Jewish wisdom from a place of personal relevance, joy, and a deep willingness to question and challenge, both the learners and the text are transformed. We will share the guiding principles for Jewish Placemaking, invite you in to experience text study for empathy as a participant, and ask you to reflect on what you’ve learned and how this modality could be powerful in your setting. Come ready to play, question, and add your voice to the long line of interpreters of Jewish tradition. From Sacred Text to Big Ideas: Philosophical Inquiry with Bible
Philosophers of all ages inquire into the meaning of contestable concepts in order to understand the ethical dimensions of our experience, to make sound judgments, and to take appropriate action. Engaging Texts engages young people in communities of philosophical inquiry that combine rigorous exploration of Biblical texts with community building and rich Jewish content knowledge. This workshop combines studying a text ourselves this way with watching a video of students doing so and reflecting on the experience. Participants will learn practical strategies for deepening Bible inquiry in their contexts. This session is relevant for Teachers, Education Directors, Rabbis, and Cantors.

Tools for Creating Engaging Holocaust Commemorations for Jewish and Interfaith Audiences
In this time of rising antisemitism, it is crucial that we make the story of the Holocaust feel relevant and resonant to everyone. Almost 80 years since liberation, the Holocaust can seem like ancient history. In this workshop, we will discuss and demonstrate how to create engaging Holocaust commemorations for Jewish audiences and, separately, for interfaith audiences. We will base these commemorations around a new ritual entitled Light from the Darkness: a ritual for Holocaust remembrance. We will demonstrate how to use this ritual in combination with storytelling, music, poetry, and targeted audience-participation questions to create a commemoration that is not only powerful and moving but actually draws the audience into the conversation.

In this session, you will learn about Sound-to-Print. It is a method of teaching Hebrew reading based on research on learning to read that posits that students need to know the sounds of a language prior to successfully tackling print.
Whether you are working with a full class, small group, or one-on-one, you can use Sound-to-Print (S2P) teaching to improve student confidence and competence in decoding Hebrew! We will explore the research upon which S2P is based, as well as games and activities that can be immediately (and easily) be used with learners and with any textbook or siddur. Something magical happens when you bring out the puppets. They provide a bridge into learning and sharing that few other “teaching tools” can. In this class, you will meet puppeteers and learn the ways they use puppets in the classroom. You will create and enliven your own puppet from simple materials, and gain skills to teach your students to do the same as you bring puppets into your curriculum and into your work with all ages of students. You will leave with resources to pursue puppetry further.

Beit Midrash in the Beit Am: A Mastery-Based Approach to Prayer Learning
During and immediately after the year we were on Zoom due to COVID, we noticed a significant drop in the Hebrew skills of our students. We experimented with a variety of approaches to the problem. Over the course of about 6 months, we moved our 4th-7th grade Hebrew from a grade-based classroom experience to a mastery-based beit midrash experience. In this session we will share how we did it, including space considerations, staffing needs, tracking devices and other aspects of the program. Our students are now motivated and confident when they approach a new prayer. They also work with and support one another. This program is now the focal point of our midweek classes and our students truly enjoy walking into the Beit Am to start their day.

This workshop will: (1) teach the difference between parent involvement and parent engagement and the role each has in youth education and engagement programming, (2) explore a variety of ways that parents can be programmatic partners, even as their own constituency, and (3) begin mapping out ways to implement a parent involvement and parent engagement plan for the 2023-2024 year and explore how engaging and involving parents leads to tangible teen participation results.

Breaking the Negative Loop: Healthy Ways to Interact with Students, Parents and Colleagues Who Push our Buttons
We all have students and colleagues with whom we too quickly lose patience-- that student whose behavior you struggle to look past, that colleague or parent you hide from when they appear. We build on these emotions, creating a loop of negativity. Breaking those negative feelings can craft a healthier work (and life) environment, and the way we look at those who will challenge us in the future. This session will offer you tools which will spark a mindset shift, helping you find your “nekudat or,” your points of light, using problem solving and open communication to spark that positive energy you need to create caring and supporting relationships going forward.

Embodied Otiyot: Finding Jewish Wisdom in the Alef-Bet Letters
In this workshop, we will learn a fun, new way to experience the Alef-Bet - through embodying the letters using imagination and creative movement.  This will add a new dimension to enhance studying, reading, and writing the letters.  We will work with the letters for the word Truth/Emet, Alef, Mem, Tav, to explore a “felt sense” of this middah/character trait. Ultimately, embodying the letters lends itself to improving ourselves and to healing the world.

Teaching children about Jewish death traditions
Many in the Jewish community lack basic knowledge of important Jewish traditions around death and mourning. In this session, I will present a new curriculum I am writing on this topic and ask for your feedback. The Jewish Association for Death Education is developing this six-part curriculum to teach students of all ages key elements to understanding Jewish death and mourning concepts, rooted in ancient practices yet enormously comforting and beneficial in today’s challenging world. The curriculum has six broad themes – appreciation, comfort, memory, honor, care and reflection. These can tie into your teaching about ethical wills, shiva, cemeteries, shmirah, burial, taharah and the afterlife.

The Miracle of the Music - How 100 year old music sheets created magic
In this session, I will share with you the story of my grandfather, Chaskel Frand who was a Klezmer in Poland, the sole survivor of his family of musicians. Out of the frustration of not being able to properly dedicate a monument to my father’s lost community of Dubiecko, Poland, and its Jewish Cemetery, I reached out to musicians of klezmer music to at least immortalize my grandfather’s life, and his entire lost family of musicians. What happened next was nothing short of miraculous! I will share my story and a documentary in progress as well as underline the importance of using primary sources and artifacts in the teaching of the Holocaust.

What if the Torah tells us a story overtly in what appears to be a clear narrative, but with some digging, it becomes fairly apparent that the exact opposite happened?! Come close-read with me and decide for yourselves if this is the case in the so-called "stealing of the birthright" story involving the twins, Jacob and Esau and their parents, Isaac and Rebecca. Antisemitism Then And Now
In this session, we will explore the history and evolution of antisemitism . Antisemitism is not new—it has been with us for two thousand years and is a foundational piece of Civilization. This course would be best suited for those interested in of Jewish history and adult and teen educators. Teaching the Holocaust is not a substitute for the study of Antisemitism; and conflating the Holocaust with Antisemitism blurs the lines of addressing Jew Hatred today.

The Most Fun Students Have Ever Had Reviewing the Year - Lag B'Omer Color War
Who doesn't wish you could review previously learned material without boring the kids to death?! By its very nature there's nothing novel in a review to excite anyone. Going over material in preparation for a quiz or test may motivate a few grade-oriented students, but most will just roll their eyes (and that assumes your school even uses traditional assessments and grades). But color wars and good natured competition is exciting. Even preparing for them can be motivating. In this session we'll explore how to put together a color war for Lag B'Omer (or any other occasion) that combines academic content and physically active events (which don't disadvantage non-athletes), alongside a year-long review of earlier lessons. And all with smiles!
