During and immediately after the year we were on Zoom due to COVID, we noticed a significant drop in the Hebrew skills of our students. We experimented with a variety of approaches to the problem. Over the course of about 6 months, we moved our 4th-7th grade Hebrew from a grade-based classroom experience to a mastery-based beit midrash experience. In this session we will share how we did it, including space considerations, staffing needs, tracking devices and other aspects of the program. Our students are now motivated and confident when they approach a new prayer. They also work with and support one another. This program is now the focal point of our midweek classes and our students truly enjoy walking into the Beit Am to start their day.
